BRDO together with the Ministry of Ecology will start the fishery sector codification

Every year, Ukrainian fish catches in reservoirs are declining: the share of imported products in the market has exceeded 80%. Moreover, in Ukraine, the production level of marketable fish products has decreased by more than half (by 53.3%) compared to 2013.

The main problems of the sector are an inefficient use of water resources and aquatic bioresources, unequal access to shared limited resources, overregulated procedures for obtaining the right to conduct aquaculture and industrial fishing activities, as well as a significant share of illegal, unreported, uncontrolled fishing activities and lack of traceability system for aquatic bioresources.

Further details are provided in the study of experts of the Better Regulation Delivery Office (Green Paper “Analysis of the Fish Industry in Ukraine”).

The fishery sector requires immediate structural changes. A comprehensive solution will be the codification of regulation of the aquatic bioresource use, ie the systematization of legislative acts that regulate the industry and, at the same time, will be aimed at solving regulatory problems of the industry and the environment.

To this end, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine is establishing a working group to develop a draft Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries of Ukraine.
